Network With All of Your Doctors

There is no substitute for sound medical advice. Before taking any drug, learn all about it. Here are some suggestions for protecting yourself:

Tell each doctor you see about all the medications you are taking — both prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
Mention any vitamin and nutritional supplements, and whether you drink alcohol or smoke tobacco.

If you’re taking a number of medications, bring the containers with you to show the doctor; have them recorded in your file.

Be sure you thoroughly understand all of your doctor’s directions about a drug, and always read the label and follow the instructions exactly.

Never start or stop taking any medications without talking to your doctor first.

It’s smart to keep a list of your medications with you at all times, along with information about the dose and frequency.
